Chanukah 2002/5763

By Rabbi Eliyahu Kaufman

Chanukah historically represents the abiding devotion of Klal Yisroel to the Torah ideals and their passionate determination to uphold and sustain them. The miracle of the Pach Shemen, cruse of oil, was but a reflection of the indomitable effort and sublime emunah of the Jews in those days.

In our time, we too are being confronted by the gravest of challenges to the existence of Am Yisrael and the continuity of our Torah.

We too are amongst the privileged in the history of our people, with the means and potential to do our utmost and to give our best in helping frustrate the evil machinations of our enemies.

Ohav Emeth is earnestly calling all of its members and friends to give maximum support to all of the numerous efforts now taking place in support of Israel, in our community.

We urge you to most fervently include in your daily prayers, Acheinu B'nei Yisroel Ha'nitunim Ba'Tzarah, our brethren in Israel who are now so beset by the present dangers that threaten them daily. We ask your generous participation in the community wide effort to raise money for the victims of terror. We call on you to participate in the support of Israel by visiting Eretz Yisrael and by purchasing and encouraging others in the sale of Israeli products.

In addition, our shul has initiated a program in order to connect ourselves in a real and personal way to individuals and families in Mitzpeh Yericho. We hope by so doing that it can lend chizuk, and encouragement to that community and individuals while at the same time enhance our own lives by identifying ourselves personally to what they are going through.

Israel's critical needs and ominous threats of its enemies demand that this year, this time of Chanukah, we successfully realize an even higher standard of accomplishment, to light those lights of help, support, and chizuk. May the inspiration of Chanukah bring to us a deeper awareness of Torah observance as we meet great needs with great deeds.
