Rabbi's Message |
|
Ethics is the very essence of yahadut. The enoblement of man's conduct on earth is the foundation of our religious faith. Through the greatly beloved Perek that we traditionally study during this time of year, the Jew reawakens his deep devotion to his moral duties in life.
Jewish ethics changes the word religion from a noun to a verb; from the ideal to the real, from exalted theory to practical fulfillment. It addresses itself to the whole of man, not just to him or her in the Beit Kinesset or places of learning. It encompasses the total sphere of living, the home, the workplace, the office, our daily pursuits, social encounters, and other relations with people; all our endeavors.
The Midrash teaches that G-d looked into the Torah in order to create the universe. The Torah is the authentic blueprint for the secure foundation of the world. The future of mankind depends not only on our material resources and technological advancement, but also on the standard of ethics we set in our religious commitment and practice.
Kol Yisroel yesh lahem chelek l'olam habah. "All Israel has a share in the world to come". We are equal partners in helping to make our world a better and more tranquil place. This is the hopeful message that the learning and diligent study of Pirkei Avot, The Ethics of our Fathers", continues to convey to us all. May we be granted the vision and wisdom to uphold these great teachings as we continue to serve Klal Yisrael, Eretz Yisrael, and Medinat Yisrael, bringing joy and blessing to all mankind.
