Purim 2000/5760

By Rabbi Eliyahu Kaufman

"When Adar enters joy is increased."
"Mishenichnas Adar marbim b'simcha." (Ta'anit, 29a)

This year, 5760, being a leap year, we add an additional month to the Jewish year. Through these calendar variations Judaism grants man the flexibility to manipulate time by expanding the yearly cycle and adding another month, Adar, the month of joy, making it possible to celebrate the Purim festival not once but twice: Purim Katan, the minor Purim in the first Adar and the major Purim in the second Adar.

It is in these months of Adar that our sages instruct us to seek out life's joy. They teach us that it is within our power to infuse our days with meaningful joyfulness -- giving stature to our lives through a faithful adherence to the teachings of our Torah. They teach us to strive to add life to our years even as we strive to add years to our lives.

Torah conveys a message of optimism wrung from the tribulations of life. It proclaims that the imperishable calendar of our existence is composed not of days but of good deeds; not of weeks but of noble works; not of months but of magnanimous acts.

Inspired and guided by Torah we can change our troubles into triumphs, our weights into wings, our temporality into immortality, lengthening our days into joyful moments of accomplishment and elevating our years into everlasting achievements.
